General Rules
- The Skillathon is open to any Jr. Fair exhibitor, even if the person does not exhibit in the species. Skillathon will be offered in the following species: Beef, Dairy Cattle, Goat, Horse, Poultry, Rabbit, Sheep, Swine, and Dog.
- Exhibitors may participate in as many species as they wish.
- Skillathon will be a pre-fair event.
- Skillathon will have three age levels (ages as of January 1) Junior: 8 - 10 years old, Intermediate: 11 - 14 years old, Senior: 15 - 18 years old
- The skillathon will be digitally completed on iPads. 20 contestants can complete the test at a time.
- In order to participate, a contestant must register for a time to take a test. If multiple tests are being taken, the contestant must sign up for that many time slots. Eample) Susie is taking the goat, beef, and rabbit skillathon. Susie would sign up for three (3) time slots.
- The Skillathon contest will have questions from Skillathon kits; current project books; or Ohio State University Extension Skillathon website for materials sources online.
- The skillathon tests will include a variety of different topics for each species. A perfect test score will be 100 points. Once the contestant has finished, the contestant will be required to immediately leave the contest area.
- Tie-breaker questions will be asked. The answers to those questions will be referred to if a tie occurs. Tie-breaker questions will be used to determine 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places only.
- Contest time is limited to 15 minutes per test. A facilitator will give the contestant a five (5) minute warning and then a time finished warning. If not completed, the contestant will be required to submit the test where they are.
- If your contestant needs additional time or other accommodations, provided a winning plan is on file, the parent/guardian needs to communicate with Extension and facilitators about the need and where the contestant will be most comfortable to take the test.
- There will be no talking in the building once the Skillathon contest has begun. A verbal warning will be issued the first time for talking in the prep area and a second time the contestant will be disqualified from the Skillathon contest and asked to leave the area immediately.
- No cell phones or other communication devices will be permitted in the testing area.
- The top three scorers in each division will be awarded $20 for first place, $10 for second place, and $5 for third place from the Preble County Agricultural Society and/or contest sponsor. The first-place winner of each age division will receive a Special Award from the Junior Fair Board.
- Special recognition will also be given to the top three scorers who receive the highest average score from a minimum of four Skillathon contests. These winners will be recognized at species shows.
